Various Artists - Industrial Accident: The Story Of Wax Trax! Records

Before industrial music found its way into arenas and onto alternative radio, a small independent record store in Chicago was helping reshape the sound of the underground. Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records celebrates the artists, recordings, and gloriously chaotic spirit of a label that brought industrial, EBM, synth-pop, and alternative dance music together under one roof.

Founded by Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher, Wax Trax! Records became one of the most influential independent labels of the 1980s and early 1990s. What began as a record store evolved into an international meeting point for musicians and listeners drawn to electronic experimentation, provocative imagery, and music that existed well outside the mainstream.

Wax Trax! helped introduce American audiences to the harder electronic sounds emerging from Europe while providing a creative home for an extraordinary collection of artists. Its catalog connected the Belgian EBM of Front 242 with Chicago's increasingly unruly industrial scene, creating a musical exchange that would profoundly influence alternative music throughout the following decade.

Industrial Accident revisits that history through recordings associated with the label's remarkable roster, including Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Front 242, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, KMFDM, and other essential figures of the Wax Trax! underground.

The music captures an era when the boundaries between genres were unusually fluid. Industrial percussion and abrasive sampling could coexist with synth-pop melodies, funk bass lines, acid-house rhythms, and the mechanical precision of European electronic body music. Some artists embraced confrontation and distortion; others approached the dance floor with humor, sexuality, and an appetite for excess.

That diversity was central to the label's identity. Wax Trax! wasn't simply responsible for popularizing a particular sound. It helped create a community in which musicians collaborated freely, side projects flourished, and the distinctions between bands often became wonderfully blurred.

The compilation also serves as a companion to the documentary Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records, which chronicles the label's history and the lasting influence of Nash and Flesher. Beyond the records themselves, Wax Trax! represented a culture of independence, artistic freedom, and acceptance that made the label a refuge for outsiders.

Its influence remains unmistakable in contemporary industrial rock, darkwave, EBM, and electronic music. The sounds developed and distributed through Wax Trax! helped establish the foundations of an international underground scene that continues to thrive decades later.

More than a collection of industrial classics, Industrial Accident is a celebration of one of independent music's most important institutions. Loud, provocative, danceable, and defiantly unconventional, it captures the creative freedom that made Wax Trax! Records legendary.
